About this site

This site is a place where I try to give people useful, important information. It contains information about emotional intelligence, some tools and resources, and some new ideas.

I was born and raised in the USA but I now I feel embarrassed, ashamed, and afraid of what is happening there. There are still encouraging things happening, but for me at least, those are outnumbered by the discouraging ones right now. I grew up believing that the USA a model of freedom and democracy in the world, which I still believe it once was, but is no longer. I would like to see it become that once again. I would like to see it the America use its power only to help -- not to hurt, kill and destroy. I would like to see the USA become the leaders in non lethal and non destructive weapons, for example, as well as the leaders in mediation and non-violent conflict resolution. I would like to see the USA and all Americans make friends, not enemies. As I travel around the world I would like to once again feel proud when people ask me where I am from and I say "the United States".

I am now 50 years old. I first began to travel internationally at the age of 25. I have been on every continent and have visited schools in many countries. I am frequently frightened and or depressed by what I have seen.

This site is also for teenagers around the world who feel pain when they see what is happening in the world. It is for those who feel pain and fear in their own homes and schools, neither of which they are free to simply walk out of, even if they live in countries which boast of being free.

It is for the teenagers who are cutting and hurting themselves because they are in so much emotional pain from abuses of all kinds, particularly emotional and psychological from the confusing, frightening and invalidating environments they have no choice but to either try to survive in, or to take their own lives as a way of stopping the pain. This site offers them a new way to look at themselves, their society, with its belifs, religions, and schools. It offers them a new way to look at the world, and offers them a way to participate in making it better.

It acknowledges the pain and problems in the world, but offers a new direction. It offers them encouragement and emotional support. It let's them know they are not alone in their pain and frustration. It let's them know they are not crazy and they do not have "mental disorders". They just lack a sane, safe, emotionally healthy place in which to live.

This site is helping create a vision of a world which is more livable for them, more sustainable, more humane.

The site is also for teachers, educators, psychologists, attorneys, social workers and school counselors who want resources to help people develop their emotional intelligence and practical skills. It is especially for those who do not accept the status quo as being the best we can do. My writing is sometimes very non-politically correct and it may offend you or challenge some of your beliefs, but please try to take everything I say with a grain of salt and realize my strong words come from my frustration and pain. Please try to take what you can and apply it to help yourself and others. In the future I intend to separate my editorial writing from the resources section of the site, but right now it is all mixed together. If you would like to volunteer to help or if you have any constructive criticism, please let me know by using this link.

EQI site number one on "Respect"

I don't usually brag a lot but I am pretty proud to find out that my page on respect has reached number one on google. Today when I checked it was also number one on emotional abuse.

Here are more google rankings of things from my site. The file is a bit old but it gives you an idea.

Questions for the day:

1. Was Ashley Casale behaving in an emotonally intelligent way to miss her university classes and march for peace across the USA?

2. How many high school authorities in the USA would say that marching for peace would be an excused absence?

3. Would a teen in West Bend, Wisconsin go to jail for missing school to march for peace?

Write me with your thoughts. S. Hein
